Life skills workshops help neurodivergent teens build the communication, self-advocacy, and independence skills they need for adulthood. Here’s what to look for, what’s available in Texas, and how TEFA and TWC-VR can help cover the cost.

Learn why hypervigilance is common among parents of neurodivergent young adults and discover practical ways to support your nervous system during the transition to adulthood.

And how it impacts the transition into adulthood By Chris Caro As Emerging Adulthood Consulting continues to grow, I’ve become increasingly focused on educational, recovery-informed coaching tools for neurodivergent adults navigating ADHD, habits, rebuilding, and the transition into adulthood. When substance use is part of the picture, appropriate clinical or substance-use treatment remains important; EAC coaching does not replace it. And if I’m being honest, this is one of t

And why I build this into every session I do If you’ve worked with me or heard me speak, you’ve probably heard me say this before: Exposure and experience are the true teachers. Not lectures. Not reminders. Not even the best advice. Experience. Because from the very beginning, that’s how we learn how the world works. It Starts Earlier Than We Think Think about an infant. Before they ever understand language, they’re already learning through experience. They mimic facial express

Overdue assignments can make it hard to know where to begin. This practical midsemester reset helps college students with ADHD clarify priorities, ask for help, and restart, with guidance for parents supporting them.

Every January, families share a familiar hope: “This year has to be different. They need more independence. They need to grow up.” Yet, a fresh calendar rarely brings fresh habits, especially for teens and young adults facing challenges with executive functioning, anxiety, or motivation. The excitement of “new year, new me” often fades quickly without clear systems, structure, or support. If your household has already started 2026 feeling stuck, you are not alone. You are not

The recent tragedy involving Rob Reiner’s family has struck a nerve for many of us—especially those who work closely with families behind closed doors. It’s a reminder of how quiet suffering can be, even in homes filled with love. As someone who’s worked as a behavior teacher for teens navigating trauma, addiction, and undiagnosed mental illness, I’ve seen what most people will never see in a classroom. I’ve witnessed spirals, psychotic breaks, emotional warfare—and I’ve sat

“Why can’t they just do it?” If you've ever asked yourself this about your teen or college-age child, you're not alone. Maybe they miss appointments, forget to text you back, or keep promising to do something but never follow through. They’re smart. Capable. Maybe even thriving in certain areas. But something’s not clicking—and it’s causing chaos at home, in school, or in life. This might not be defiance or immaturity. It might be executive dysfunction. What Is Executive Dysf

Transitioning into adulthood can feel like stepping into uncharted territory—especially for neurodivergent teens and young adults. The path to independence isn’t one-size-fits-all, and finding the right kind of support can make all the difference. That’s why I’m passionate about helping families bridge that gap between school and adulthood with empathy, structure, and strategy. And the good news? North Texas is home to some incredible programs that are helping young adults gr

Breaking barriers as a Hispanic female entrepreneur: my journey of resilience, representation, and empowering the next generation of leaders

"My 21-year-old still doesn’t know how to manage money or show up to appointments on time. I feel like I failed somewhere along the way." Sound familiar? If you’re a parent of a neurodivergent teen or young adult—especially someone with ADHD, executive dysfunction, or anxiety—you’re not alone. The transition from high school to adulthood isn’t one-size-fits-all. And when traditional systems like school or therapy fall short, many young adults struggle to launch. At Emerging A

At Emerging Adulthood Consulting, we talk a lot about Legacy in Progress—the idea that healing, growth, and parenting don’t follow a linear path. We build better futures when we choose to show up, especially in the places we were never shown how. There’s a kind of parenting that doesn’t leave bruises, doesn’t shout, and doesn’t walk out. But it still leaves a mark. It’s the absence of presence. The quiet invisibility of emotionally inattentive parenting. It’s when parents phy

Is It Laziness—Or Something Else? If you’ve found yourself asking, “Why won’t they just get up and do something?”—you’re not alone. Parents often describe their teen or young adult as lazy, unmotivated, or careless when they consistently avoid schoolwork, job searching, basic responsibilities, or even getting out of bed. But here’s what I want you to know: it’s rarely laziness. More often, what looks like a lack of motivation is actually: Executive dysfunction Anxiety or shut

When Driving Feels Like a Mountain, Not a Milestone Learning to drive is often considered a rite of passage into independence. But for many teens and young adults—especially those with anxiety, neurodivergence, or low confidence behind the wheel—it doesn’t feel empowering. It feels overwhelming. As a parent or caregiver, this can leave you stuck between wanting to encourage independence and not knowing how to ease their fears. You might be asking: How do I help without pushin

Waiting for the "Right Time"? We often tell ourselves, "I’ll start when I’m ready." But what if readiness isn’t the golden key we think it is? Maybe it’s the young adult holding off on applying for a job because they’re not 100% confident, or the parent waiting to have a difficult but necessary conversation because it feels too emotional. These moments of hesitation are deeply human—but they can also keep us stuck.? What if waiting to feel fully prepared is the very thing kee

When the First Step Feels Like the Hardest One If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a mountain of things you want to change—but...

The Illusion of “On Time” From the moment we enter the world, there’s an unspoken timeline we’re expected to follow. Graduate high school at 18. Finish college by 22. Land a stable career. Get married. Buy a house. Have kids—all before 30. If you check all the boxes, you’ve “made it.” If you don’t? You’re somehow “behind.” But here’s the reality: this timeline is imaginary—a societal blueprint that was never meant to fit every individual. And yet, so many young adults (and th

A Photo, A Moment, A Message I took this photo in 2010, during a break from college, trying to figure out my next steps in life. At the time, it was just a creative outlet—me playing with photography, trying to be “edgy,” without realizing I was expressing something far deeper than I understood back then. Looking at it now, over a decade later, I see a young woman silently screaming for release. A woman who was torn but didn’t even realize it. A woman who had been suppressing

Why Do We Feel Stuck? Growth is something we all crave, yet so many of us find ourselves trapped in cycles of sameness. We talk about change, dream about it, even set goals around it - but when it comes to actually stepping into it, something holds us back. That "something" isn’t always obvious. Sometimes, it’s deeply ingrained in our upbringing, the social expectations we’ve absorbed, or the mental roadblocks we’ve unknowingly built for ourselves. These invisible barriers ke

The Silent Burden We Carry From the moment we are born, expectations are placed upon us. Some are spoken outright, while others are silently woven into our lives—passed down from family traditions, societal norms, and personal experiences. These expectations tell us who we should be, what success looks like, and how our lives should unfold. But what happens when those expectations no longer fit who we are? What happens when we find ourselves holding onto them, even when they
